SOFT CULTURE
2020-ongoingSoft Culture is a project of connection, material identity and correspondence. The project starts with a “mother:” a crafted starting point for a culture to grow. The mother is then handed, or mailed to an individual who is asked to make a “soft” contribution of their choosing. Each individuals’ contribution is not only an addition to the larger macroculture, but it is a reflection of the individual’s specific space, place and identity: a microculture. The individuals’ contribution is what keeps the mother alive and thriving: like a bacterial culture, the mother will die without space and added material. As the culture continues to be passed on, the Soft Culture collects, accrues, and cultivates a unique macroculture which is made up of individual microcultures. Soft Culture cultivates an experience of connection, both physically and mentally. Physically, the contributors are connecting their culture to someone else's. Mentally, contributors are connecting with the others who have already contributed, and have yet to contribute.
