HARD LANDING / SOFT OPENING

2023
collaborative exhibition of sculpture, sound, and drawings

A pop-up group exhibition of provisional, collaborative artworks created by MFA candidates at WSU. To create this exhibition, graduate students went to Kamiak Butte in Palouse, WA with minimal materials. Artists were asked to respond to the environment in an intuitive manner for approximately three hours, working mostly in groups. In the following days, artists edited and organized their ideas for installation. The result is both a quirky tribute to the Butte and surrounding landscape and a reflection on resolution. How does an artist decide when a work is ready for exhibition? When is work finished? How does effective collaboration happen? Taken together, these works respond to and showcase the unique features and social conditions of the Palouse while celebrating how restrictions in time and location can foster collaboration, curiosity and ingenuity.
